Bruin Football Visits Elementary School On Friday, Feb. 1, six members of the UCLA football team participated in "Super Bowl School Spirit Day" at 186th Street Elementary School.Running back Raymond Carter, quarterback Patrick Cowan, offensive lineman Nick Ekbatani, defensive tackle Brian Price, fullback Thevor Theriot and defensive back Courtney Viney spent about two hours with the youngsters. The Bruin players spoke to the students on the importance of staying in school and getting good grades, played games with them and signed autographs. (more) |

Photo Gallery and Wrap-Up From the Marathon Kids 2007 Event For the second year, UCLA hosted the Marathon Kids Kick-Off at Drake Stadium on Saturday, October 13. Approximately 5,000 children and their parents filled Drake Stadium and began their goal of running or walking a distance of a marathon over the next five months. Jeanette Bolden, Head Women's Track and Field coach and 2008 U.S. Women's Track and Field coach, welcomed the participants and ran the opening ceremonial lap to kick off the event. Over 120 Bruin student-athletes were on hand to support the k-5th graders and sign autographs after the event. (more) |

1500 Kids Attended First LA Event To Promote Physical Fitness Under cloudy skies at UCLA's Drake Stadium on last Saturday, October 14, over 1,500 children and their families participated in the Inaugural Marathon Kids Kickoff Celebration, hosted by UCLA Athletics. Drake Stadium was filled with grade-school children and their families, as kindergartners through fifth-graders from LAUSD ran the first mile (a lap and a half around the track) of the five-month long Marathon Kids program which promotes physical fitness and health. Bruins Participate in the Annual UES Jogathon Student-athletes from the football, women's basketball, swimming, women's soccer, men's soccer, women's track, and women’s volleyball teams participated in the Corinne A. Seeds University Elementary School (UES), 10th Annual Jogathon: Celebrating Fitness and Community. The event took place on Friday, April 21 at Drake Stadium and included over 450 students from UES. Bruin student-athletes spent their time cheering on the students as they ran around the track, answering questions about their experiences as UCLA student-athletes, participating in a dance contest, and teaching the students the 8-clap cheer with the UCLA yell crew!  | Bruins Visit Evergreen Ave Elementary UCLA football cornerback Joe Hunter along with UCLA soccer players Lindsay Greco and Kendal Billingsley visited a classroom full of anxious 5th graders at Evergreen Ave Elementary School Tuesday morning. The athletes were greeted with welcome signs at the entrance of the classroom, a huge banner made by the students filling the chalkboard area, and the UCLA Fight Song serenading them as they marched into the room. On Sunday February 23 the fifth and final "I'm Going To College" event this school year, the Women's Gymnastics team ended the program with Jamie Dantzscher earning a 10.0 with her floor routine on the last event of the day.  | Bruin Pen Pal Day At UCLA Softball After exchanging letters throughout the season, elementary and middle school students from the greater Los Angeles area were able to watch their pen pal softball players beat Oregon this Saturday. In addition to the 7-0 victory over the Ducks, the day was topped off with photos, autographs, and a meet and greet session. With more than a thousand fans cheering from the stands, Coach Enquist later expressed her appreciation for the Pen Pal's presence at the game. The young fans met several Bruin players at Spaulding Field for an exciting afternoon of fun, football drills and instruction. The team signed autographs, passed out posters and talked to the children about life as a UCLA student-athlete.  | UCLA Participates in 'First Book' On October 31, Bruin student-athletes, coaches and administrators participated in the First Book Gift of Reading Tour. First Book, in partnership with Coca Cola and Scholastic Inc, brought the world's largest book to the UCLA campus where every signature gathered from members of the UCLA community translated into a book donation for a child in Los Angeles. At the end of the day, over 4,000 signatures were collected. UCLA received 2500 books for its children's literacy projects and the remainder of the books were donated to children's organizations throughout Los Angeles. (more) |

 | Bruin Athletic Council Sponsors 'Bruins For Relief' Effort In response to the events of September 11, the Bruin Athletic Council (BAC) sponsored an event called, "Bruins For Relief." Bruin student-athletes, coaches and athletic department staff collected donations at the UCLA vs. Oregon football game on November 10 at the Rose Bowl. The day's efforts raised over $42,000, all of which has been donated to the Families for Freedom Scholarship Fund. This fund, which will be in place for the next 25 years, will provide financial assistance for children of victims wishing to attend a college or university. (more) |
