LONG BEACH, Calif. - Senior right-hander Tyson Brummett (10-5) recorded six strikeouts through 8 2/3 innings Friday afternoon to lead the UCLA baseball team past Pepperdine, 7-3, in the opening game of the Long Beach Regional at Blair Field.

Brummett pitched eight scoreless innings before allowing three runs in the final frame and notched his team-leading 10th victory of the year. Pepperdine right-hander Barry Enright (12-5) absorbed the loss, surrendering six runs (five earned) and seven hits through 6 1/3 innings. UCLA left-hander Tim Murphy made two pitches in the ninth inning with the bases loaded to earn his second save.

Third baseman Jermaine Curtis hit 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run. Second baseman Alden Carrithers and center fielder Justin Uribe each logged one hit and scored twice.

Leading 3-0, the Bruins added another run in the fourth inning on an RBI-single by Carrithers. UCLA's advantage swelled to 7-0 with a three-run seventh inning. Curtis' RBI double plated Uribe and Decker's single through the right side sent home Curtis. Carrithers scored on the next at-bat, through the right side by right fielder Gabe Cohen.

Pepperdine added three runs in the ninth inning using five hits and a fielder's choice. The Waves were led offensively by second baseman Denny Duron, who finished 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Pepperdine first baseman Ryan Heroy belted a two-out, two-run homer to left, cutting UCLA's lead to 7-3.
