Zalameda Named Pac-10 Player of the Week

Bruin senior helps UCLA to a 6-1 victory over USC.

March 18, 2008

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA senior Riza Zalameda has been named the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Mar. 10-16, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced on Monday.

Zalameda enjoyed an outstanding week of tennis, participating in the qualifying draw of the WTA Tour's Pacific Life Open before helping No. 10 UCLA to a 6-1 upset over eighth-ranked USC. She teamed with Tracy Lin at No. 1 doubles against USC, clinching the point with an 8-6 victory over the eighth-ranked pair Amanda Fink and Gabriela Niculescu. Zalameda, ranked No. 7 nationally in singles, then picked up a dominating 7-5, 6-0 victory over No. 38 Lindsey Nelson at the No. 1 position. That win snapped a five-match losing streak to Nelson, as Zalameda's last victory over her rival was during her freshman season in 2005.

The No. 8 Bruins (12-4; 2-0 Pac-10) will next be in action on March 25 against the University of Hawai'i.

It marks the third Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for Zalameda in her career.
